Everything you need to know about Wind Turbines

Posted on 18th November, 2016

Wind turbines are used to generate electricity from the kinetic power of the wind. When air hits the wind turbine, the blades spin, converting the wind’s kinetic energy into mechanical energy. This rotary motion then travels down the shaft and drives a generator where the electricity is produced.

Wind turbines can be used to generate large amounts of electricity in wind farms both onshore and offshore. However, historically they were more frequently used as a mechanical device to turn machinery.

Types of Wind Turbines
There are two main kinds of wind turbines:

Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines
This is a propeller type rotor mounted on the horizontal axis. As mentioned previously, the blades need to be aligned with the wind and this is done by either a simple tail or an active yaw. These are more efficient at producing electricity than VAWTs; however, they are impacted more by changes in wind direction. Most of the wind turbine installations in India are of this type.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

These are aligned in the vertical axis (like the rotor blades on a helicopter). These are only deployed within urban areas, where the flow of air is more uneven. Due to their alignment, wind direction has little impact on this type of turbine; however, it is apparent that these are less efficient than their HAWT cousins.

Components of Wind Turbines

The most primary components in a wind energy generating system are - rotors, stators, hubs, main frames, main axel, bearing housings, blades, nacelle controls, generator, tower components and power electronic components. Whereas, a modern wind turbine consists of about 8000 unique components.

All the components are equally essential and need to undergo stringent inspection and a regular maintenance check-up. This usually involves lubricating the moving parts and checking the oil level in the gearbox. It is also possible for a worker to test the electrical system on site and note any problems with the generator or hook-ups.

Premier Ltd is one of the largest wind turbine component suppliers in India. They specialize in manufacturing structural steel parts that are required for direct drive windmill generators. Premier Limited is also in the field of manufacturing the structural steel parts for the Gear Box type wind mill generators. This manufacturing process involves heavy and precision welding, fabrication, corrosion resistance coating & painting as well as machining procedures. The end products are ready-to-fit components suitable for wind turbine generators.

Wind Turbine Manufacturers in India
Today, the Indian market is emerging as one of the major manufacturing hubs for wind turbines in Asia. States like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh and are known to be the major wind turbine manufacturers in India.

Considering the growing need for energy, the wind turbine companies in India are currently in a dynamic phase of high growth and development and are looking for opportunities where the power supply situation and infrastructure development efforts provide a huge market for active investment.
